We are excited to let you know that we are launching our LEGO CLUB!
LEGO has been a fun part of childhood for decades, but the last 15 years have seen the bright, colourful bricks emerge as a therapy tool. Hereโs what you need to know about LEGO Club, including what it involves and how it can help children with social challenges and communication difficulties build effective social skills within a safe environment and in a really fun format!
We are offering this group to children aged between 8-14 years old, and will be organising groups based on age and skill level.
We are planning on offering several group formats:
1. An intensive group over 3 consecutive days in the July school holidays and
2. A longer 5-week program throughout Term 3.
What Is Lego Club?
LEGO Club is an evidence-based, play based approach that aims to develop social and communication skills for children with social or communication difficulties and children on the autism spectrum
Using childrenโs love of LEGO play as well as their strengths and interests, children work in small groups to build LEGO models to develop skills such as sharing, turn-taking, following rules, using names and problem-solving.
What Does LEGO Club Involve?
Each session starts with informal greetings and a reminder of the rules, and ends with some free LEGO play time for further developing relationships, creativity and play skills.
The children are given specific jobs in the building task and work together to complete their goal of a finished model. They are:
- Engineer โ reads the instructions and gives directions to the others
- Parts supplier โsorts through and finds the right bricks for the builder
- Builder โ puts the bricks together according to the directions.
And together they build the model!
What are the Advantages of LEGO CLUB?
LEGO Club is used to teach children skills like turn-taking, sharing, listening, conversation, teamwork, shared attention, problem solving, self-regulation, encouragement, patience and how to see different perspectives.
Children learn best with their peers and are more likely to interact with each other through collaborative play. The shared focus on building uses childrenโs strengths and helps them practice social and communication skills while having fun.
Sessions are facilitated by therapist(s) with an understanding of working with children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and/or developmental or social skills difficulties to help support skills such as sharing, turn-taking, collaboration, conflict resolution, and verbal and non-verbal communication.
Parents / carers will receive a summary from the Psychologist highlighting the child’s progress of social skills and any recommendations.
