Inspired by a new TV show, it got me thinking about setting and achieving goals. Do you want to know how to achieve your goals? The answer is SMART Goals. If we set them up right the first time, we are far more likely to achieve them.

S – Specific

Ensure your goal is specific. You need to be very clear on exactly what it is you want to achieve. For example “I want to be fit” is not a specific goal. A more specific goal would be “I will increase my running speed from 6ks per hour to 8ks per hour”. The participants on this show were very specific about their goals “I will climb the Sydney Harbour Bridge”

M – Measurable

You need to be able to measure your goal. If you can’t measure it, how do you know when you have achieved it? For example “I will run 5ks in 30 minutes” is a measurable goal. It will be very clear if you are improving your fitness, increasing running speed and achieving your goal. Another example “I will come first in a whip cracking competition” this is a measurable goal. You either come 1st or you don’t.

A – Achievable/ Accountable

Is your goal achievable? Is this something that you can achieve? Is this something within your power to change? This doesn’t mean you can’t dream big! In fact many participants in the show had huge, life changing goals. They pushed themselves, took responsibility and most of them got there, if they didn’t, they got very close and they still committed 100% to making it happen and did everything within their power to get there.

The other A – Accountable is very important. Being accountable really helps to ensure the success of our goal. To be accountable we need to tell others about our goal. If we have told those around us we are far more likely to take to steps in achieving the goal. Why? Because we don’t want to let others down and we don’t want to look silly. Being accountable to others rather than just keeping the goal to yourself is a great way to stay on track. The participants on this program were VERY accountable. Not only did they sit on a stage in front of an audience and state their goal i.e. “I will become a bodybuilder” the show was aired to 1000s of people. Imagine if you broadcasted your goal to the country, do you think you would be more likely to take steps and work on the goal? Of course you don’t need to broadcast your goals to the country, however, telling as many loved ones, friends and colleagues as possible would be a great way to be accountable. Even better, get them involved!

R- Realistic

Is your goal realistic? Similarly to achievable. Is this something that you can realistically do within your power? Setting a goal like “I want to become an astronaut and land on Mars next week” Is probably not realistic for many of us.

T – Time Based

Give yourself a time frame. A time frame gives you something to work towards and is a concrete finish line. For example “By September I will …..”

Lastly, and very importantly, it’s all about COMMITTING to the goal, imagine what it will look like and how it will feel when you get there.

To COMMIT you need to state your goals as if it is going to happen “I WILL …..” Rather than “I would like to” or “it would be nice if”

Remember ….. “I WILL”
